Outreach and Education

Since 1988 I have been running what is effectively a one-man “Astronomy Outreach and Education” project here in Cumbria, giving illustrated lectures about astronomy and spaceflight to community groups (Lions, Round Tables, Soroptomists, W.I.s, U3As, BNFL science groups, etc) and other groups.

I have also lectured at science Outreach events for the public at such well-known Cumbrian venues as The Brewery Arts Centre, Westlakes Science Park, Tullie House, The Rum Story, Kendal Library and Kendal Museum.  Further afield I have given lectures and presentations in London, on the Shetland and Orkney Islands and museums across the country.

I regularly give science presentations in junior schools, helping teachers meet the “astronomy” requirements of the National Curriculum, and now work with CBEC to take science and technology into junior schools in the South Lakes area. I have spoken to pupils in schools from as far apart as the Shetland Islands and London, and have even taught pupils in the United States whilst visiting there. (NOTE: I have a full and up to date CRB check for working in schools).

I am able to provide all my own equipment for my talks – laptop, digital projector and screen etc – and all my Powerpoint presentations feature not only the very latest and most up to date images from NASA and other space agencies around the world, but unique and dramatic images made myself, using Photoshop and other computer software.

A typical talk lasts for approximately one hour, and members of the audience are encouraged to ask questions both during and after the talk.

Here are just some of the lectures available:

  • A TOURIST’S GUIDE TO THE SOLAR SYSTEM
  • A TOURIST’S GUIDE TO THE UNIVERSE
  • THE SEVEN WONDERS OF THE UNIVERSE
  • A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO THE NIGHT SKY
  • VISIONS OF MARS –THE MYSTERIES OF THE RED PLANET
  • UFOS – FACT vs FICTION
  • LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE

If you are interested in having me come to talk to your group, please contact me for details of availability and cost (I charge a minimal cost, which allows me to keep my equipment up to date and purchase the software etc needed to present my lectures)

Hi Stuart!
I have read your website with interest. We moved to Leasgill, near Milnthorpe, nearly 2 years ago and the night skies are amazing as there is so little light pollution. I bought my husband a telescope but he hasn’t the confidence or know-how to set it up. Are you available – obviously for a fee! – to give him a hand? it is such a shame that this rather fancy piece of equipment is not being enjoyed. He did have one some years ago but seems to have forgotten what to do. I’m hoping that he’ll be inspired to join the EAS group once he’s got the telescope up and running.
Many thanks,
Maggie Hart
